This week the UNHCR released a report on based on research undertaken in 44 countries on four continents. It shows that for many refugees a connected device is a lifeline and a critical tool for self-empowerment. In addition the Federation of Canadian Municipalities has produced a Welcoming Communities toolkit on how municipal governments can create welcoming communities for refugees and immigrants.
Other resources added this month include SFU refugee programs. Simon Fraser University recently established a Refugee Working Group to develop, coordinate and implement the University’s refugee-related engagement and support. The Refugee Working Group (RWG) provides advice, connections and information on refugee students, community engagement and research.
In the news and success stories this week include Chatbot that overturned 160,000 parking fines now helping refugees claim asylum, free career workshops for youth, Victorians “incredibly welcoming” towards Syrian refugees, and they fled war in Syria. Today, they manufacture emergency equipment for Canadians.
